Chapter 16
EXHAUSTED FROM the all-night excursion and the all-day-long computer tasks, Stone and Cade took turns yawning. Now and again one would stretch, rub at their eyes, then return to work. They’d finished dinner, cleared the mess, and plopped back down at their stations once more. Not much of a break when you considered the number of hours each had put in lately.
Micah watched them and felt guilt settle firmly over him. He needed to shoulder more of their workload, if he only had the expertise to do so. However, what good was all the security equipment and alarms if you had to be watching them every minute of the day?
“Everything working okay?”
Cade nodded wearily. “Yeah. Recording everything. So far, your crew is going about their day, nothing exciting, even a bit mundane.”
“Too bad Warren couldn’t come to check the computers for a couple of days. Damned poor timing to go out of town.” Micah grumbled under his breath. The bastard was probably off selling more top secret data to the highest bidder. He consoled himself with the knowledge that this would be the last time his IT security consultant would do so. Forever.
He glanced over at Stone, found him watching another computer screen, this one flickering between images of the woods and the offices at Source Genetics. Stone looked tired enough to curl up on the floor and crash for a long catnap, despite the amount of coffee they’d all drank.
Micah could empathize. He propped his eyes open by sheer willpower. No sense in suffering, though. Not when they could crash for a while, rely on their hard work to watch over things in their absence. A fatigued shifter could easily become a dead one.
“Let’s leave the devices to their work and get some shut-eye.”
Both men blinked up at him.
“But….”
Micah shook his head, silencing Cade. “It’s early evening. Not the most likely time for an attack. Besides, you just said all programs are a go. No sense in staring mindlessly at the screen when the alarms will notify us of anything out of the ordinary.” He glanced to Stone, pinning the man with his gaze. “If we don’t get some sleep, we’ll be slow, dull, and vulnerable.”
Stone ran his hand through his short blond hair and sucked in a breath. “Yeah. You’re right. Sleep would do us some good.” He stood and arched his back. “I’ll take the couch.”
“I’ll take the couch.” Micah’s tone discouraged argument.
A frown covered Stone’s face. “I’m the bodyguard. Taking the couch allows me to watch the entrance to the house. So that’s where I will be.” He clipped the final words, making his sentiment well known.
Micah’s lips thinned, and then he relaxed. No sense in bickering over such a trivial matter. Not when they were so tired they could probably sleep standing up against a wall. “Okay.” He respected the man all the more for putting aside his comfort for the rest of them.
“I’ll get some pillows and a blanket.” Cade strode down the hall, returning a couple minutes later with a small pile, which he set on the couch.
